Subject: Pause for Pregnancy for 9 Minutes on 09/09/09

Calling all NOFAS Georgia friends and supporters!

I’m thrilled to invite you to a very special event happening just one week from today that will raise awareness about fetal alcohol syndrome and officially launch Georgia’s first chapter of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

On September 9 – International FASD Awareness Day – we will be joining advocates across the globe in a “Pause for Pregnancy” to encourage women to pause – pause and think about the effect of alcohol on pregnancy. Men and women dressed to look like they are pregnant will be “freezing” for nine minutes on the ninth day of the ninth month to draw attention from passersby.

As dedicated advocates for this cause, I would like to ask for your support of this event. Please consider taking a few moments out of your day, and joining us to participate in the “freeze” at 12:09 p.m. at Georgia State University’s Library Plaza. (See specific contact information below.) We will provide balloons to blow up and place under your clothing, as well as informational cards for passers by who are interested in why we froze.

For a pregnant woman there is no known safe time to consume alcohol, nor safe amount. Despite fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) being 100% preventable, an estimated 35,000 infants are born with FASD each year in Georgia alone, leaving children at risk for birth defects, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Pregnant Pause event was conducted in London’s Victoria Station last year with great success. You may want to visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCkpWKHHzts to take a peek.

Thank you in advance for contributing your time and “dramatic” talents
to educate the public about the risks of alcohol in pregnancy.

We hope you’ll join us on September 9th at 12:09 p.m.!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you plan to come and participate, please send a quick email to dkwinokur@charter.net with the number of people joining you, if any. You will receive an email with further instructions. Your “call time” for this important performance will be 11:45 a.m. Thanks so much!
